Raiatea (Ra’iātea) Spotlight
Tahiti, called The Queen Island, is the largest of the Society Islands with an area of 1044 km2 (403 sq mi) and almost three quarters of the country’s population residing here. Papeete, which means ‘water basket’ in Tahitian, serves as the administration center of the French Polynesia. Tahiti’s Mont Orohena, at 2,241 m is the highest point on French Polynesia.
To travel to other Society Islands from Tahiti you can either take a flight with Air Tahiti and Air Moana or catch a ferry from the ferry terminal in Papeete.

Some of the tourist attractions in Tahiti are in Papeete like the popular covered market and museums, others include the lagoon to explore, drive along the coast to experience the nature, encounter cascading waterfalls and enjoy soft sandy beaches as well as unique black sandy beaches. The picturesque mountains of Tahiti also provide hiking opportunities that are suited to different levels and ages.
