Since Roman times, Lake Como has been a retreat for the rich and famous. It’s dotted with numerous historical villas, beautiful gardens, and cultural landmarks. Activities include boating and other water activities, especially during warmer months as well as hiking, biking, and visiting towns like Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Como itself.

Access to Lake Como is generally through Milan or Bergamo, with regular trains from Milan reaching Como or Lecco. Within the lake area, transportation includes public ferries, private boat rentals, and navigating by car, though roads can be narrow and challenging.

Lake Como, or Lago di Como in Italian, is one of Italy’s most picturesque and renowned lakes, nestled in the Lombardy region in the north of the country. Surrounded by the Alps, the lake is near the border with Switzerland, about 50 km (31 miles) north of Milan. Known for its distinctive inverted Y-shape, Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy, stretching approximately 46 kilometers (29 miles) in length.

A small village located on the western shore of Lake Como in Italy, part of the municipality of Tremezzina.

Villa Carlotta houses an art museum and botanical garden.

Often called the “Pearl of the Lake”, located at the intersection of the three branches of the lake, famous for its beautiful villas, gardens, and narrow cobblestone streets.

A charming village on the eastern shore, renowned for its colorful houses, the Villa Monastero with its botanical garden, and the romantic walkways.

The villa traces its roots back to the 15th and 16th centuries, with its oldest parts attributed to the noble Serponti family. Over the centuries, it passed through various owners. In 1980, it was acquired through a public subscription by the citizens and friends of Varenna to preserve it for public use. Today, it’s managed by the R Collection Hotels group, which has undertaken significant renovations while maintaining its historical essence. Perhaps the most celebrated feature, the gardens of Villa Cipressi descend in terraces to the lake, offering stunning views. They contain a diverse array of flora, including exotic species not typically found in Northern Italy, thanks to the microclimate of Lake Como.

On the western shore, offering a quieter experience with a medieval center, beaches, and outdoor activities.
