All about layers

Consider clothing that dries quickly and doesn’t retain water. Essential are raincoats, rainpants and sturdy hiking boots.

Base Layer

A moisture-wicking base layer to keep skin dry. It helps to regulate body temperature. Avoid cotton as it absorbs water and dries slowly. Fine merino wool is great for the base layer. Any other synthetic fabrics is good too. In addition to a short-sleeved t-shirt pack long sleeves and leggings, especially for cooler temperatures.

Middle Layer

For insulation to retain body heat and it should be breathable. A fleece, a soft-shell jacket or a wool sweater are popular. Locals love knitted with the special Icelandic wool sweaters . Down vest or jacket is great for cooler temperatures. The fast-drying pants under the shell layer, rainpants, or insulated shell pants are the best to wear.

Waterproof Outer Layer

Invest in a good quality waterproof and windproof jacket. Look for one that’s breathable too. Waterproof or at least water-resistant pants are recommended. A rain cover for your backpack comes handy with sudden rain too. During winter months, packing a thick, insulated parka or down jacket is a must.

Footwear

Waterproof, sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are crucial, especially if you’re planning to explore beyond the city. Ensure they are broken in before your trip. Wool or synthetic socks that keep your feet warm and dry.
During winter months, waterproof hiking boots with a good grip for icy conditions are recommended. Consider packing crampons as well.

Accessories

Even in summer, a headband, hat, gloves, and scarf or balaclava may be necessary due to the wind. A swimsuit for hot springs or geothermal pools and sunglasses are good to have. For very cold days and winter sports or glacier hikes thermal underwear is essential as well as hand warmers. In summer months a sleeping mask for the perpetual daylight will come in handy.
