Explore Lake Como
Lake Como, or Lago di Como in Italian, is one of Italy’s most picturesque lakes and trendy tourist destination. Recognized for its natural scenic beauty, the lake is surrounded by the Alps near the border with Switzerland, about 50 km (31 miles) north of Milan. Known for its distinctive inverted Y-shape, Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy, stretching approximately 46 kilometers (29 miles) in length.
Since Roman times, Lake Como has been a retreat for the rich and famous. It’s dotted with numerous historical villas, beautiful gardens, and cultural landmarks. Activities include boating and other water activities, especially during warmer months as well as hiking, biking, and visiting towns like Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Como itself.
Access to Lake Como is generally through Milan or Bergamo, with regular trains from Milan reaching Como or Lecco. Within the lake area, transportation includes public ferries, private boat rentals, and navigating by car, though roads can be narrow and challenging.
